The beginning of a short story I wrote for class:

The afternoon sun beat on concrete. Brielle’s eyes stung from the intense light.  Klair and Elise were laughing hysterically at Emma.  Brielle wasn’t sure about what they were laughing at.  “Hey, guys, come over here.”  Brielle was unsure why she wanted to go to the park, but it screamed relaxing.

“What?” Elise complained. Brielle knew that the park was not Elise’s favorite place after she fell in the lake. “I hate that place.”  Elise looked pale. “You know my experience with that park.  No, I’m not coming.”

Klair looked at Elise, “Please, when we were young, we always would play down there, it was refreshing and relaxing.”  Everyone knew that Klair was into fitness, everyone.

“Klair and Bri are right, El,” Emma looked at Elise; she looked very hurt.  “Come on, El, it can’t hurt.”

The more Elise looked at it, the better it seemed.  The air would be nice after a long day at school.  Maybe it was because Bri was no longer in her classes, or was it Klair, she was known to trick people into doing dumb things.  "Okay, let’s go.”

They walked to the park sat on the bench by Baltic Avenue.  The fall air was crisp and windy.   Emma felt calm after the long day of school.  Her mousey brown ponytail hit her lower back when she sat down.  She took a deep breath before speaking, “This is the feeling I miss, coming here on Friday after school in eighth grade.  I miss it.”

Klair kicked her legs.  She was always moving, “Em, you run here every day for cross country.”  Her feet hit a mound of dirt.  “What the-” She stopped to look at the ground.  Covering it was a mound of roses.  The roses looked out of place. They were black and gold with silver stems.

“These are so pretty!” Elise said grabbed one. Her head was drooped low to the ground.    They were real, but the paint job was bad.  It looked as if someone picked off all the petals, painted them, and glued them back on.

“You would like them,” Klair was already pulling roses out of the dirt.  Her head spun in place as she thought of reasons why they were here.  “Maybe there is treasure here, dig!”

Bri was apprehensive about this. “Why?  This is stupid-” Her voice stopped once a hand was found by Elise.  Elise screamed and would have run back to her house if it wasn’t for Klair.  Elise was fast, but Klair was faster and could easily catch up to her.

“No!” Elise’s voice was shriller than normal. “Klair, let go of me!  Call the cops!”  Klair had Elise’s hands behind her back before she could protest.  Surprisingly, even with her arms twisted a horrible angle, it didn’t hurt Elise.  “Klair, put me down!” Elise was getting annoyed by her.

Meanwhile, Emma had called the cops and reported the body.  “They’ll be here in a flash!” Emma almost sounded proud.

“Why so happy?” Brielle asked as she watched Elise struggle against Klair’s strength.

“Hey, you don’t get to call the cops every day!”

            “Isn’t that a good thing?”

            “Don’t ruin my fun, Bri!”

Finally Klair let go of Elise. “I say we call pizza delivery and see who comes first, the police or my meat lovers’ supreme!”  Everyone but Elise laughed.

“No, I’m a vegetarian!  Plus we-” She was cut off by Klair.

“Please, I just wanted some fun.”

In 10 minutes the cops came.  There were three people, two guys and one woman.  The guy loomed over all of the girls. He was the only one in a uniform.  The other two were in street clothes.  His voice scared Brielle. There was so much power in it.  “Hello, I-”

As always Klair cut him off, “You are…” She had to study the tag carefully because of her dyslexia. “Matthew…”

“Comber.”  He looked to the girl, “This is Head Inspector Katherine Thomas.”

She had a warm smile and said, “Call me Kat.”  Her black hair and gray eyes shined brightly in the sun.  “This is Daniel Blake, my assist-.”

“I’m her assistant.  So you found a body?”  His voice was high pitched.     “My other assistant,” she shot Daniel a mean look and he cringed, “Tim is at the lab.  He will be here shorty.”

The firemen had to remove the bench before the body could be uncovered.  When it was found, it was in horrible condition.  It was bloody and cut up limb for limb.  There was a crown sewn into its head and its eyes were carved out of their sockets.

As soon as Elise saw it she screamed.  Brielle wanted to run, Klair was dumbstruck, and Emma almost passed out.  Kat look unharmed, and Daniel looked a bit uneasy.  The cop just looked at it.

“Is that my old assistant, Justin Hatch? He went missing a few days ago.  But, this is not what I thought happened.”  Kat breathed deeply, she always did when she was trying to calm down.  Kat studied the body, “Daniel, send it to the lab.  I’ll look for anything useful, starting with them.” She pointed at the girls.  “The blood is fresh and you were last here, Matt will talk a bit to you. I’ll be back.”  And with that she left on a hunt for clues.

There are a lot of mistakes, so bear with me, I wrote this two years ago.
